COACH MONICA AT THE 2016 OAKLAND RUNNING FESTIVAL HALF MARATHON WITH RBO

Monica Chan - Coach

Monica is an Oakland native, a digital marketer, and an avid runner. She has always felt a connection to her neighborhood and in 2016 she became more involved with RBO. This gave her the opportunity to give back to her community through her passion for running.

As a self-taught marathon runner, she started running Lake Merritt in high school, participated in her first half marathon in college, and completed her first full marathon shortly after. Fast-forward to today, she’s completed over 25 races, ranging from 5K's to full marathons. Monica is known for her nomadic lifestyle; she spent a year running and backpacking through Eastern Africa, Western Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. She loves how running allowed her to explore and connect with new people and places. In the future, she plans to add destination races to her travels.

Monica has found amazing friendships and personal fulfillment through running, and hopes to continue supporting the RBO community to find the same joy.

Coach Monica is CPR, AED, and first aid certified.

She loves running alongside the students and seeing them accomplish greater distances week after week. She is continually in awe of their perseverance, and hopes to help students discover the joy in running, just as she did at their age. Coach Erin is CPR, AED, and first aid certified, as well as RBO’s former Communications Director.

Outside of RBO, Erin works in the QA department at Ghirardelli Chocolate Company. If she's not running or eating chocolate, you can catch her hiking, traveling, or drinking coffee!

COACH ENRIQUE AT THE 2021 VIRTUAL KAISER SAN FRANCISCO RACE

Enrique Henriquez - Coach

Enrique was born in El Salvador and moved to San Francisco when he was just 6-7 years old in order to escape the turmoil that was happening in his country. His family later moved to Oakland where he attended Lazer Elementary and Calvin Simmons Middle School (now under a different name).

He has been coaching since 1998 when he was a junior at St. Mary's College in Moraga where he ran Cross Country for the Gaels on a full running scholarship. After graduating from college, Enrique worked with adjudicated youth for 2 years in Camden, NJ, where he fell in love with teaching and helping youth. He appreciates the wealth of freedom, empowerment, and the many doors that running has brought to him that he strives to give back to the community that has given him so much. A former member of the Transports Racing Team, he now races whenever possible for Excelsior Running Team.

In his spare time, he enjoys playing with his two boys (9 and 11 years old) and helping the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO), where his kids participate in cross country, basketball, and track & field.

Sarah Holvick - Coach

Sarah joined RBO in fall 2021 and was immediately hooked.

Sarah grew up in a small town in the Tahoe foothills. She moved to the Bay Area to attend UC Berkeley, and fell in love with the Bay Area. Sarah joined the Peace Corps in Cameroon, and has been living in Oakland since she returned to the US.

She has always been a runner, but not a particularly fast one. Sarah is not embarrassed to share that she took last place in several of her high school cross country races. Sarah hit her running stride in college and beyond, now having completed close to ten half marathons and many more 5 and 10ks. She believes that the run is about a race against yourself, not against anyone else.

When not running with RBO, you can find Sarah playing volleyball in a local recreational league, hiking with her husband and dog, or exploring Oakland.
